Chalem uses demographic and longitudinal methods to examine evolving relationships in several important institutions of the American political economy. One of his two main research focuses is on labor market dynamics. He explores the relationship between workers and employers by tracking employment insecurity since the 1970s. His second focus is on American federalism. He examines how state governments shape income inequality and how their fiscal relationships with the federal government have developed since the 1960s.
